Early in the 1800's ~
Some Christians in Bath, of Congregational and Baptist churches, looked up at Combe Down and saw that the population, growing in numbers with the thriving stone mines, were without any place of worship, and, putting thoughts into action set about obtaining a 600 year lease of land whereon to build what was to be called UNION CHAPEL.
(Now independent and self-supporting and a Grade II Listed Building)

Internal improvements are also recorded for it seems that there was 'no ceiling to the roof, rain frequently coming through, and the tallow candles used far lighting purposes caused a great deal of discomfort to the worshippers, but not withstanding these drawbacks. . . the presence of the Master made the place... The very gate of Heaven to their souls."
The old pews with doors were replaced by 'up to date styIe', further `the primitive stove (wood/coal burning) was replaced by modern hot water heating apparatus' (solid fuel). Gas was introduced in 1911 for lighting, electric lighting in 1934. (‘ ....... ‘ indicates extracts from old records) |
