Burial Ground

The Burial Ground was at the front of the chapel and also on the left-hand side as you enter. This later part has subsequently been built over.

The first burial was on Boxing Day 1828 when Amelia Gerrish, aged just 9 months, was laid to rest.

Altogether there have been 212 burials at Union Chapel in possibly as many as 124 different graves.

The last one was on May 20th 1916 when Mary Caroline Harris of The Bath Workhouse Infirmary (now St Martin's Hospital) was buried.

The burial ground was formally closed by an Order-in Council made on 29th October 1919 at Buckingham Palace.

So as not to disturb any human remains the extension built in 1957 had a concrete raft for its foundation.
